This week a number of trade news outlets are reporting on a study commissioned by HiPages investigating The On-Demand Tradie Economy. The study looked into the breadth of opportunities associated with the adoption of technology in the sector.

There were some very interesting findings that definitely align with our observations and community feedback here at TradeEpay. Some of the key points in the report were:

  • Tradies are spending up to 14 hours a week on admin, including: creating invoices, providing quotes, doing general paperwork and following up on late payments.
  • 70 per cent of the Tradespeople that took part in the survey believe that using technology would make them more efficient and give them more free time.
  • Online methods to find and work with tradies are preferred by Property owners under the age of 35. With 53 per cent of this demographic saying Google search is how they would find a tradie
  • The time lost to admin, paper work and chasing up late payments, can cost Tradies up to $120,000 every year

Both homeowners and tradies identified a number of key areas they believe technology could better be utilised to improve the experience of renovating, or building a home:

  • Locating a dependable tradie – 48% of consumers interviewed
  • Unexpected expenses when the job is finished – 45% of consumers interviewed
  • Cash only business policies – 33% of consumers interviewed

*Respondents could select more than one answer.

With the effect that technology is having on the sector, it is clear that to stay competitive, tradies must embrace technology, now and going forward.
